READ
Read the following passage aloud slowly. We’ll be repeating a line from this Gospel text multiple times. Allow the group to wade into this passage and receive these words from God.
Since then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. (Colossians 3:1-4)
Pause for a few seconds
“Since then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above”
(repeat the above line 3 times, pausing between each reading)
DISCUSS
Use the following questions to guide group discussion
- Do you resonate with how Chris defined the human person as composed of a mind, body, will, and spirit?
- Have you ever thought about spiritual formation before? As you reflect on your own life, do you see how you have been formed, either in the image of Christ or in other ways?
- What are some ideas for how one might be spiritually formed outside of God? What are some ways for how one might be spiritually formed by God?
- Chris said that “Spiritual formation is the movement of the Holy Spirit through concrete means of grace that shape us into the image of Christ.” Concrete means of grace are experiences of God’s presence, love, and grace for us in our everyday lives. What activities come to mind as you think about experiences of God’s loving presence?
